In terms of the games story, it's one of the most common complaints you'll see surrounding Shenmue 3, with people saying is that it doesn't conclude much/has a lack of story progression ( Yes, it does end on a cliff-hanger, but you do learn some cool new things/more questions and meet some cool new characters). Was still good, but just felt more like a B-grade kung-fu flick than the paced Shenmue tale. As others have said, you can get through the game in ~30 hours (if you just focus the main story), but there is a lot more there if you want to see/get everything (took me about 72 hours). In answer to your question, it is much of the same searching for clues that the first 2 games were, but at the same time, there's a bigger emphasis on fighting/gaining strength, side quests, and a lot of extra mini games etc to do. If anything, you will get a lot of joy and smiles from the nods to Shenmue 1/2, and the nostalgia it brings.
Sure, there are some not great parts of the game, but in general it's still a good game and it does have a lot of good in it (the first half of the game is great IMO). You have to remember that people love to complain, and that makes up the majority of the posts on here/the internet lol. It's not all doom & gloom like you would believe from all the negative posts on here. If you like S1 & S2, then I think you'll find something to like in S3, and I think it would be worth the time commitment.
